Experience God’s Word Come Alive

Students continue the discipleship process begun in DTS by addressing a variety of topics illuminated in the Scriptures, by building godly character, and developing a lifelong hunger for the Word of God. This will not only be accomplished in the classroom, but also outside the classroom, through one-on-ones, small groups, and evangelism in the community.

A typical week will include:

  • Personal devotional time
  • Explore God’s story through the entirety of Scripture
  • Learn practical inductive Bible study tools
  • Life-on-life discipleship
  • Small group Bible study discussion
  • Observe the chronology of biblical events
  • And more!

Coming into DBS, I knew nothing of the personal relationship with God that was available to me through the Bible. I had prided myself on knowing the Bible and understanding it but I didn't know the heart behind it. I struggled a lot through the first couple weeks of DBS because I was refusing to let the Bible be anything more to me than a history book. In DBS, I was encountered by the Holy Spirit at a night of worship, and this broke down the walls which separated my head knowledge and my heart's emotion. After that, I have found the Bible to be alive. As I read through the Bible, I am no longer shying away from my emotions and the love for God that is in this book. Through DBS, I have learned how to worship God in both spirit and in truth.

Going into DBS, I actually had no hunger for the Word. I felt like the bible was so outdated and wasn't relevant to our day and age. But throughout the school, I noticed that my heart posture started to change. I started to become more interested in reading the word, and it started to make more sense to me especially as we learned about the historical background of each book. I realized that the bible is so important to know, read, and understand because, similarly to how it’s important for all of us to know the history/culture of where we come from, as followers of Jesus - it’s so important to know our history! And throughout centuries, God’s character hasn't ever changed. It was my perspective of the word that changed and I realize it’s completely relevant to all believers - no matter what era you’re born into.

I enrolled in Kansas City’s Discipleship Bible School (DBS) immediately after my outreach for DTS came to an end. I now feel as though my incredible YWAM experience would have been incomplete without it. If this were like building a spiritual house in one’s own life, DTS would be like the process of leveling ground and digging up weeds, while DBS would be akin to laying the foundation: one prepares and the other establishes. My three month season at DBS was a time of encounter with truly life-altering results. I possess a new and intimate familiarity with the Bible, and it seems so much more accessible to me now. I’ve also experienced radical shifts in my personal worldview which has reshaped me in various ways while sobering me to the reality of a future totally invested in Christ. DBS is a vital course which should be taken by every graduate of DTS as I truly believe that one completes the other.
